Who we are:

Neighborhood House is here for families facing hunger and homelessness, vulnerable seniors and children who need help in school. Founded in 1905 by the Portland Section of the National Council of Jewish Women, Neighborhood House was the city’s first organization committed to helping the many immigrants who were arriving at that time, and living primarily in South Portland.

What we do:

Neighborhood House assists low-income, recent immigrant and other vulnerable people living in the greater Portland area. Our programs serve disadvantaged children needing help to be successful in school, families facing hunger and homelessness, and seniors needing support so they can remain living active and independent lives.

Neighborhood House's program participants represent a remarkably diverse mix of ethnicities and cultures. To meet the needs of these diverse communities, Neighborhood House offers culturally-specific services for African, Latino, Middle Eastern and Russian immigrants in various programs. We have many bilingual staff who speak Spanish, Russian and Somali and other African languages to effectively reach out to non-English speakers and to insure they feel welcome and are getting the help they need. What we offer our employees:

Neighborhood House believes our employees are our best investment. Because of this, we provide an excellent full-time (30 hours and above) benefits package including a fully paid medical plan with no out of pocket expenses for co-pays, prescriptions, out-of-pocket expenses (really!) through our Nonstop Wellness broker, paid dental insurance, paid life insurance, paid long term disability insurance, 403B with matching, FSA, and more. Job Title: Applegate EHS Teacher Aide
Department: Applegate EHS

Pay Rate: $12-13.50/hr DOE
Type: Full Time 10AM-6PM

POSITION SUMMARY

The Teacher’s Aide at Applegate Early Head Start is dedicated to the development to the whole child and creates and engages in interactive and fun activities that promote the social, physical, emotional and intellectual growth of children ages 6 weeks to 3 years (depending on classroom assigned).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES.

Co-teach classroom of up to 8 young children (depending on age) for up to eight hours/day
Follow leadership and teaching responsibilities of lead teachers
Support environment that provides a rich variety of physical, social, emotional, cognitive and language experiences for children ages six weeks to three years
Comply with Oregon Child Care licensing, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, and Oregon Department of Education (ODE) Child Nutrition Program (CNP) requirements for the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP)
Support an environment that promotes good health and nutrition
Follow procedures for maintaining CACFP records; accurately count and report CACFP reimbursable meals when teacher is not present
Help children develop basic health habits and plan health and educational activities
Promote and support the physical, emotional, and intellectual development of children
Help maintain classroom records, cleanliness and orderliness
Engage with and be responsive to current and prospective families
Support the philosophy that children learn through play
Appreciate and work with children and families particularly those from a culturally and/or socio-economically diverse background
Comply with all Neighborhood House and governmental regulations regarding the care of children
Assist in and accept responsibility for temporary duties if other personnel are not available
Attend and participate in meetings, trainings, events, and parent/family meetings as requested and/or required.
Must be able to stand up to 95% of the day and sustain high level of energy
Must be able to occasionally lift up to fifty pounds, and regularly kneel, bend and sit on the floor to attend to children’s needs
Must possess acceptable hearing and visual capabilities to monitor the environment and assure children’s well-being.
Both indoor and outdoor environment are typically found in daily work. Depending on activities and season, may be required to be outdoors for regular, prolonged activities.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position does not supervise.

QUALIFICATIONS

Course work in Early Childhood Education, CDA, A.A. or B.A. preferred
Experience working in a culturally, racially, and economically diverse community
1+ years of direct experience in licensed center working with assigned age group preferred
Able to set and maintain professional boundaries with families and children
Excellent organizational skills and attention to details
Enrollment in the Oregon Central Background Registry and willing to obtain the following or supply documentation of prior training within the first 90 days of employment:
First Aid and Infant CPR certification
Oregon Food Handlers card

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret documents. Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in writing and oral form. Ability in researching, analyzing, and problem solve.

The employee is frequently required to stand and walk; kneel, or crouch. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. the employee must possess acceptable hearing and visual capabilities to monitor the environment and assure children's well-being.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters. Both indoor and outdoor environment are typically found in daily work. Depending on activities and season, may be required to be outdoors for regular, prolonged activities. Interact on the playground with children and spread out from other teachers to be able to appropriately supervise play

HAZARD RISK

AT RISK: This position has been determined to be at risk for bloodborne pathogen exposure. In addition to the standard hazard communication training, this employee is required to take annual bloodborne pathogen and personal protective equipment training prior to working.
