Young Musicians and Artists (YMA) is a residential summer camp focused on visual, literary, and performing arts. The mission of YMA is to provide young people with a unique personal experience in the arts, where they share creative interests in a positive environment that builds confidence, enhances self-esteem, and reinforces a sense of community.

Position overview
YMA seeks an exceptional leader to deliver on our mission by continuing the summer camp tradition while seeking opportunities to grow YMA into an even more sustainable, high-impact organization.

The Executive Director (ED) will lead YMA by managing the finances, staff, and structure needed to enact YMA’s mission. The ED will increase YMA’s visibility by serving as the external face of the organization, developing partnerships, handling grant writing and donor relations, and overseeing recruitment for the camp. The ED will ensure YMA’s sustainability by ensuring fiscal responsibility and guiding the Board of Directors. The ED will lead the growth of YMA towards long-term impact by creating a strategic plan and setting and achieving ambitious goals. This position requires a passion for our work, significant capacity for marketing and fundraising, a strategic vision, and the ability to support the day-to-day operations of a small organization.

The ED will report to the YMA Board. This is a full-time, exempt, management position. For the right candidate, a .8 position may be possible.

Position responsibilities
Development (40%)
The ED will build a broad base of support for YMA by:
• Designing and implementing a development strategy and building a sustainable funding base
• Determining appropriate funding sources and writing grants
• Handling donor relations
• Building a corporate sponsorship program
• Coordinating an effective funder, camper, alumni, and donor database

Recruitment and Outreach (30%)
The ED will ensure strong visibility for and recruitment in the YMA program by:
• Designing and implementing a recruitment strategy that ensures high enrollment each year
• Building and maintaining partnerships with educational and arts organizations in the region
• Managing YMA’s marketing and communications materials and strategy
• Serving as an external face of YMA by building and managing relationships with strategic partners, the philanthropic community, media, and the general public

Organizational Management and Oversight (20%)
The ED will lead YMA by:
• Supervising, training, and evaluating 1-2 year-round staff members
• Providing fiscal oversight for YMA, including developing and implementing budgets and managing the organization’s finances
• Providing organizational oversight for YMA, including overseeing legal and insurance policies, office systems, and technology
• Working closely with the YMA Board of Directors, including helping to recruit new Board members, planning Board meetings and retreats, and proactively communicating with the Board
• Facilitating (likely with external support) a process to strengthen the equity, inclusion, and diversity of YMA at all levels
• Continuing a strong organizational culture, with a commitment to impact, learning, and improvement

Strategic Growth (10%)
The ED will ensure a successful future for YMA by:
• Leading a strategic planning process, including an exploration of year-round programming, partnerships, affiliation, and other growth models
• Establishing YMA program goals and meeting those goals
• Conducting evaluation of camp to continually improve programs

The ideal candidate will have:
• Experience raising funds and developing partnerships (connections in the Portland community preferred)
• Experience creating and implementing recruitment or marketing plans
• Experience developing and executing on a strategic vision
• Knowledge of nonprofit structure and governance (basic knowledge of nonprofit accounting and QuickBooks preferred)
• Strong verbal communication skills in order to communicate effectively with diverse constituencies
• Excellent public speaking, writing, and organizational skills
• A willingness to learn and receive feedback
• A Bachelor’s degree

• Some work from Salem required when camp is in session in June/July

40 hours/week*
• Flexible work hours
• Some non-business hours required for occasional evening and weekend events, especially when camp is in session in June and July
* For the right candidate, this job may be able to be adjusted to 32 hours/week with tasks transferred to other administrative staff

$50,000-$58,000; generous vacation time. Opportunity for growth in salary and benefits pending strengthened financial position for organization.
