The dental hygiene faculty member provides didactic, laboratory and clinical instruction for dental hygiene students in an on-campus clinical facility, and may include off-campus fieldwork sites.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

* Teach a variety of didactic, laboratory & clinical dental hygiene courses

* Serve as an academic advisor to assigned students

* Provide laboratory and clinical instruction, evaluation and supervision for dental hygiene students

* Monitor patient care to ensure that patients receive safe and appropriate care.

* Assist with orientation, calibration and supervision of part-time clinical instructors.

* Assess the completeness and accuracy of student, patient and clinic records.

* Maintain confidentiality of information related to students, patients, faculty and staff.

* Monitor student, patient and instructor compliance with clinical policies and procedures.

* Participate in long-range planning, program development and outcomes assessment

* Pursue professional development opportunities to maintain current knowledge & skills

* Integrate scholarly activity into teaching & professional growth

* Contribute to university and community service

* Participate in professional association activities

* Represent the program within the university & in the community

* Serve as a role model for the dental hygiene profession.

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS: Other related duties as assigned

JOB SCOPE: The dental hygiene faculty member is primarily self-directed with some guidance from the Program Director. The dental hygiene faculty member has decision-making authority within the parameters of this position.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: The dental hygiene faculty member may provide supervision for part-time laboratory and clinical instructors.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE

* Graduation from an accredited dental hygiene program

* Bachelor's degree in dental hygiene or related field; master's degree preferred

* Licensed or eligible for dental hygiene licensure in Oregon

* Clinical experience with local anesthesia, nitrous oxide-oxygen administration, and restorative procedures preferred

* Current knowledge of dental infection control procedures, radiation safety, emergency management, HIPAA and FERPA

* Current certification in Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers

* Formal preparation in educational theory and teaching methods

* Knowledge of current concepts in dental hygiene and dental hygiene education

* Current teaching experience in clinical dental hygiene education

* Current clinical experience as a licensed dental hygienist

* Experience working with patients who have limited access to dental care

* Experience with computer-based dental practice management systems

* Experience with Microsoft Office computer software including Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.

* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

WORKING CONDITIONS: Primary work setting is a dental hygiene education program located on the health professions campus of a private university. Some work may be scheduled at off-campus fieldwork sites.
