PeaceHealth is seeking a
Clinical Bioethicist : Mission Services for a
full time, exempt position.


Responsible for acting as a key community and/or network resource and coordinator of clinical ethics across the continuum of care, which includes patients, their families, and caregivers in all settings. Assists in the education, communication, and deliberation of clinical and organizational ethics issues. Provides consultative support related to clinical and organizational ethics issues including, but not limited to palliative and end of life care. Cross community support and engagement in local, network and system Mission Services initiatives is also an expectation of this role.


: Responsible for the community and/or network:level ethics committee(s) as assigned, in conjunction with or acting as co:chair of the medical centers committee, shaping agendas, facilitating meetings, researching and providing resources for ethical issues identified by the committee.
: Participates in interdisciplinary rounds on specific medical center units, evaluating cases for ethical issues that need to be addressed. Conducts and/or facilitates ethics case consultations, analyzes cases according to acceptable bioethics standards, identifies ethically appropriate options, and communicates those to patients, families, and staff.
: Educates others on Core Knowledge related to ethics consultation as identified by ASBH: Decision Making Capacity, Informed Consent, Surrogate Decision Making, Advance Care Planning and Advance Directives, End of Life Decision Making, Privacy and Confidentiality, Pregnancy and Perinatal Issues, Difficult Patients: Professional and Institutional Responses, Recognition of Context and Negotiation of Differences. Educates others regarding the clinical and organizational ethics issues related to the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services (ERDs).
: Participates in new caregiver and provider orientation; engages in education regarding the ethics committee(s), ethics consultation service, the ERDs, and facilitates enculturation in PeaceHealth values:based decision making model, and helps coordinate PeaceHealths formal discernment processes as appropriate.
: Participates, coordinates and serves as resource for ongoing ethics education programs and communicates this information to ethics committee(s), leaders, and caregivers as appropriate. Works with other PeaceHealth entities to address the specific clinical and organizational ethics issues that arise and provides ethics education as needed.
: Collaborates with the System Vice President of Mission Services and Director of Ethics (or designee) regarding trends, cases, discernments and ongoing ethics needs related to clinical, social and organizational ethics issues.
: Participates as a member of the System Ethics Committee; attending meetings, participating in sub:committee work, and other functions as appropriate. Participates in overseeing organizational compliance with accreditation and regulatory standards (DNV, State, other) pertaining to patient rights and responsibilities, especially those pertaining to palliative care and end of life.
: Facilitates policy development and the review of policies for ethics components/issues. Serves as a system resource for critical projects as assigned.
: Engages in ethics:related quality improvement activities to address ethics:related quality opportunities within the domains of end of life care, shared decision making, the healthcare environment, and professional responsibility.
: Performs other duties as assigned.
