Audition Casting Call Tips
Casting Director Tips To Get The Job

Place a Secure Order Today

1. Be prepared. Know your craft. Auditions are your way to market your skills and demonstrate your value to the entertainment industry.

2. Be professional and courteous - to everyone- from the security guard at the front gate of the studio to the receptionist to the casting director, and everyone in the audition room. A performer’s personal behavior speaks volumes. Talent is hired on 3 things, your look. talent and your professionalism.

3. Be punctual. Casting takes place in a fast-paced environment and casting directors appreciate consideration of their time and schedules. Don’t waste their time! Be personable and responsive, but don’t talk too much or overstay your welcome.

4. Headshots and resumes. Make sure your headshot looks like you. Airbrush all you want, but you better look like just like your photo when you walk into that room. Always have extra headshots and resumes on hand at every audition.

5. Presentation. Make sure you can be seen and heard. Position yourself so that your face is visible (also, keep long hair out of your face). If you can’t be seen or heard, your performance is lost. Dressing for a role is fine, but don’t wear a costume. Wear something that suggests the character or the profession and let your performance do the rest.

6. Do your homework. Know who you are auditioning for. By researching the director, casting director, producer and show, you may find connections to other people or projects, and learn about the style or genre of a project or its creators.

7. Don’t let anything throw you. You have a right to be there, you were invited there to audition. When other performers enter the waiting room and don’t look like you, think about yourself as “the other way to go.” Often the casting process is about exploring various ways to go with a character, so stay confident and show them how you would do the role. If you’re asked to read another role or make an adjustment, take a moment, and then do your best to do what is asked of you.

8. Be gracious and receptive. Be open to direction. Don’t challenge, make excuses or try to explain yourself. Stay open and easy to direct. Casting directors may want to see if you can take direction.

9. No chit chat. They don’t want to hear about the traffic, or how your day is going. Put yourself in their position. They will meet 15-50 performers auditioning in one day. Would you want to hear 50 excuses on why you were late? Go in. Do your best work. Get out. Leave them wanting more instead of having overdosed on you.

9. Auditions, like scenes, have a beginning, middle, and an end. Walk in confidently, take charge of how you want to work, do your job and get out of the room (always leave them wanting more). Once you have left the audition, let it go. You can have a great audition and still not get the job. They just went another way.

10. Casting directors remember good work. Follow all of these steps and you will be called back by the casting director. It may be for that part or it may happen five years down the line. Each successful audition is like money in the bank. Show yourself in the best light possible by being prepared, professional and positive.

In most cases a pilgrimage is a religious or spiritual journey to a shrine or holy place by a devotee. Yet there are many reasons someone can go on a pilgrimage. They could be searching for inspiration, creativity or peace. They may be trying to find answers to large and small questions. Or they may need a break from everyday life. There also many different ways to go on a pilgrimage. It could be a long journey to a sacred place or a walk around the block. It could be a life change like going back to school at age 50, moving across the country, a divorce, or a marriage.

What Pilgrimages have you taken in your life?

This show is in partnership with the Dougy Center

The Dougy Center was founded in 1982 and our pioneering grief support model has been replicated in over 500 sites throughout the U.S. and into Africa, Asia, Australia , Europe, and South America . We currently serve over 380 children, teens, young adults, and their parents each month at our Portland , Canby, and Hillsboro locations. Our staff conduct trainings on grief and loss and interventions following deaths in schools or the community. The Center is supported by contributions from individuals, corporations and foundations; families are never charged a fee.

On Father's Day 2009, June 21st, The Dougy Center's home of 21 years, a beautiful white 1922 house on SE 52nd was destroyed by an arsonist. The building, one of our 3 locations, served about 80% of our families and housed 8 of our 12 staff. We have rented a temporary home for program services at 2228 NE Glisan , and our staff will operate out of renovated quarters next to the destroyed building as we begin the rebuilding process. The fire did not destroy our mission, our hope, or our resolve to serve children, teens, young adults, and their families grieving a loss through death.

Audition Tips for Children

1. Encourage your child to be themselves. If your baby model, child model, teen model or child actor is the best "them" they can be.. you are ahead of the game and will enjoy the whole process as much as the rewards.
2. Some children may be shy and need encouragement. Start gently, keep it fun and do not keep pushing if your child resists.
3. Let the casting directors and children’s agents do their jobs. They do this full time and they want your child to be great.
4. If the audition has lines or takes place in a specific scene, Work with your child in the waiting room only, do not coach them in the audition room. Keep it fun and light.
5. Show up to audition casting calls on time or early if possible. That way you can both relax before the audition. Be professional.
6. Parents should be supportive and protective. Your child will not get many of the parts they try out for. Only one child gets each part. It is important for you and your child to learn to deal with rejection. There will always be another audition. Keep it fun and light.
7. Don’t take rejection personally. Maybe today they wanted a redhead. Or perhaps they decided on a three year old and not a two year old. Just because you didn't book this job, does not mean you did anything wrong.
8. Be professional and courteous -to everyone- from the security guard at the front gate of the studio to the receptionist to the casting director, and everyone in the audition room.
9. Teach your child to listen and be open to direction.
10. No chit chat. They don’t want to hear about the traffic, or how your day is going. Put yourself in their position. They will meet 15-50 children and parents auditioning in one day. Would you want to hear 50 excuses on why you were late?
11. Casting directors remember nice children and nice parents.
12. However successful children become, remember they are still children.
13. Support and encourage, but don’t push.
14. Set up short term goals to promote their sense of accomplishment and self-worth.
15. Maintain balance in their lives through quality family time.
16. Never treat professional children as superior to their brothers and sisters or peers.
17. Guard against children becoming either too egotistical or too insecure as a result of their career.

AmeriCorps - Corps Respond Member

-Corps Respond Member Position-
- Northwest Youth Corps/AmeriCorps – Oregon/Washington/Idaho/California/Arizona

Position Description:
The Corps Respond Program (CR) is an exciting new program offered by Northwest Youth Corps (NYC) which is based in Eugene, Oregon. In 2010, a team of ten AmeriCorps members led by a full-time Youth Corps staff member will form the Corps Respond Team whose efforts will focus on disaster preparedness, safety education, community outreach and conservation projects throughout the northwest. The Corps Respond Program's schedule will include training and conducting education sessions in Lane County and in rural communities, as well as completing conservation projects and technical trainings throughout the northwest and Arizona. By the end of the ten month period, CR participants will have a skill-set which will allow them to pursue leadership, disaster response, wildfire, education, and/or conservation careers. Examples of trainings and skills which may be included in the CR schedule: Red Cross disaster response training, CERT certification and trainings, WFR and CPR certifications, advanced chainsaw training, power tool trainings, experiential teaching skills, technical trail and structure construction, conservation skills, wilderness survival and minimal impact camping skills, Red Card wildfire certification, Search and Rescue trainings, leadership and judgment training, conflict mediation trainings, suicide prevention trainings, volunteer coordination and event planning training and experience, curriculum writing, grant writing and more. The CR training curriculum is being finalized and should be considered tentative and subject to change.
Early on in the 10-month term, Corps Respond members will complete one six and one five week field project in Arizona with one week off in between. The first project will be modeled after NYC's Leadership Development Program. This training will introduce members to conservation and technical project skills, what life is like for the youth who participate in the other NYC programs, as well as focus on group management, project management and judgment skills. The second project will focus on honing and polishing the skill-set of trail and conservation work as well as demonstrating the changes in the work format of future projects.
The rest of the term will be divided between trainings and service, with field work, trainings and presentations. Members may exchange between weeks of service and trainings such as Red Card certification and chainsaw training. They may spend weeks in town teaching Outdoor School and Outdoor Oregon students, and attending and conducting trainings. As skill development progresses, members will begin to engage with communities to teach disaster preparedness. For example, serving with the Eugene CERT program or Red Cross, members will plan, coordinate and present classes to local schools, community groups and Northwest Youth Corps students, staff and members. The CR Team will serve alongside youth crews providing disaster preparedness and technical trainings. Members may serve with local communities where conservation projects are based to teach disaster preparedness skills such as building a 72-hour kit, or preparing homes for disasters such as wildfires.
Conservation projects include, but are not limited to, trail construction and maintenance, habitat restoration, noxious weed removal, fuels management/silviculture, campground maintenance and other projects. Frequently, projects are located in extremely remote settings, often with little contact with the "outside" world.
All told this program spends at least 70% of their time out and away from the Eugene area. A simplified breakdown of the “out-of-town” time spent in the Corps Respond Program would show that 50% is spent doing Field Projects; 40% is doing outreach projects; while the remaining 10% is strictly traveling to and from these projects. While on paper there is not much time spent in the Eugene area there are plenty of opportunities to engage in the community and get involved with local events. Some of the previous members used their time in town to go to open mike nights, Em’s baseball games, cycling around the area, going to events at the University of Oregon, or just hanging out in town.

CR Team Member Duties and Responsibilities:
Complete field projects throughout the 10 month period
Develop and implement curriculum, training and educational materials to support community outreach
Outreach and teach youth and adult’s emergency and disaster preparedness
Act as a team player, role model and leader
Prepare required daily and monthly paperwork

Desired Qualifications:
Bachelors Degree preferred
Experience in classroom and/or field education
Valid driver's license and a history of responsible driving. Must be 21 yrs old to qualify as an NYC driver
Ability to acquire a Class B CDL driver’s license (requires OR residency)
Experience in the outdoors, familiarity with minimum impact camping techniques
Desire for personal challenge
Experience in conservation and/or recreation skills
Strong communication skills and a vested interest in community service
Ability to participate in intense physical labor/extreme weather conditions frequently under stressful and adverse conditions
Excellent judgment and risk management skills

Terms of employment:
10 full time AmeriCorps Corps Respond members will serve a 10-month term starting January 4, 2010 - November 5, 2010, for a minimum of 1700 hours. There will be both in-town work (Eugene/Lane County) and conservation work, often in remote locations. The position break down is approximately 70% field work/travel/out-of-town work and 30% community/in-town work. There will be evening and weekend work/training/outreach. The team will serve over eight hours a day while on spike or disasters.

Program Benefits:
$11,400 living allowance dispersed evenly on a monthly basis, health insurance, paid leave dispersed over the 10 month period, a $4,725 education award upon completion of the 1700 hours of service. The living allowance and education award are taxable. Members are responsible for providing housing and food when in Eugene. Service eligibility is contingent upon the results of National Sex Offender Public Registry, criminal and driver’s background check.

To apply: Please see our website for complete application requirements www.nwyouthcorps.org/americorps_all_positions.html or contact us at corpsrespond@nwyouthcorps.org

Each application must be accompanied by a cover letter, resume and three references. Applications are accepted until positions are filled.

Learn how working in expanded states of consciousness can reveal and shift deep patterns in the psyche and transform our experience of the world.

Free lecture and slide show: "Healing Lifelong Patterns with Altered States"
Thursday, Sept. 24
6:30-9:00 PM
Friends Meetinghouse, 4312 SE Stark, Rm 12
Portland

This presentation will review the range of possible experiences encountered during altered states work and the powerful potential for healing that these states offer. It covers in depth Dr. Stanislav Grof's model of the four birth matrices as experienced by clients in expanded states of consciousness, as well as the phenomenon of psychological death/rebirth. These matrices, or imprints, have a profound effect on our lives, shaping the way we experience the world and our place in it and manifesting as a variety of physical and emotional symptoms. Working with these imprints in expanded states of consciousness can bring about far-reaching changes in all aspects of our being. The presentation includes images from Holotropic Breathwork and psychedelic sessions. An invaluable background for understanding and integrating material experienced during a breathwork session, other altered states work, or any form of deep experiential inner process.

The presentation is free. (Donations to cover costs are welcome.)

About the Presenter:
Kiel Hemenway trained in Holotropic Breathwork under its creator, Dr. Stanislav Grof. She certified under Dr. Grof in 1998 and has been leading breathwork retreats since then. She has been studying means of tapping the transformational potential of expanded states of consciousness for more than 15 years. For more information, go to www.essentialnature.net .

Helpful Insider Information
Kids Agent Tips

www.commercialkids.com/ck/helpful_tips.cfm

1. Write a short cover letter telling them about you. Be creative and professional in your mailing approach. If they want you– don’t make them hunt for your contact info. Include your contact number on everything! Be Polite. Don’t call again and again. They got your package. If they like your type or need your type, they will call you. If not now, they might need your type next month.
2. The more mailings you send out the better your chances. Kids talent agents come and go frequently and kids casting agents work on various projects. You need to keep your name, and photo out there and often. The more you are out there, the better your odds of booking jobs.
3. Always use a legitimate licensed kids talent agency. Get the up-to-date kids talent agent list at commercialkids.com if you are planning on doing acting, modeling, singing or dance professionally, these are the only talent agents you should ever use. If they are not on our lists, they are NOT LEGITIMATE and NOT LICENSED.
4. Do your homework. Millions of people are trying to break into showbiz. Be professional and stay ahead. You need to know who the executives are that are currently working on a project. All of our listings consist of currently working professionals. If they are not currently working, they are not listed. Just another way we save you time and money.
5. Study, practice and, then, study more. Take classes, and, then, take more classes. When you get that audition for that dream role, you will need the talent to back it up. Never stop learning and improving.
6. Don’t be afraid to start small. If you are planning on becoming a star and make your living as actor or model: learn your craft by taking smaller roles, doing plays, print work (fashion & commercial), and commercials. All are great things that will give you experience, skills, and credits and pay great money.
7. Be a big fish in a small pond. You don’t have to be in L. A. or N. Y. to be successful. Get a local licensed kid talent agency from our list and build experience locally before hitting N. Y. or L. A.
8. Do commercials. They teach you how to audition, work with kids agents, negotiate, act, work on a set, build your resume and bring income. One national commercial can pay you over $100,000 over two years. If you or your children are really serious get our Lights, Camera, Kid’s video and learn from industry professionals.

TARGETING KIDS AGENTS

* Determine what your interests and needs are and use our kids agents lists and preprinted casting director mailing labels to reach those specific casting agents, talent agents, modeling agents, music agents and dance agents.
* Reach out only to licensed legitimate agents. If they are not on our lists, chances are they will charge you fees and steal your money.

GET INVOLVED

* Take classes. Read books and listen to CD’s. These materials will give you an advantage over the competition.

RESUMES

* Children and babies are not expected to have a resume. However if you have taken classes or have done jobs, let the Casting Directors and Talent Agents on our lists know.
* All resumes are not created equal. Tailor your resume to the specific area of representation in which you are interested (i.e. If you are looking for a commercial agent, list your commercial credits first).
* Always keep your resume current, and remember to include a contact telephone number.
* Voice talent: An audio demo tape should generally not exceed 3 minutes. The purpose of the tape is to display your style, quality and range.

INTERVIEW YOUR KIDS AGENT

* Make the most of the situation. Ask questions. Be polite, but ask questions. The interview process works both ways.
* Remember, your agent works for you and you work for your agent. The ideal relationship will be satisfying and beneficial for both parties.

CHILDRENS HEAD SHOTS AND KIDS MODELING PORTFOLIOS

* Don’t spend money on modeling portfolios or head shots when you are just starting out. Especially with babies and young children. They change too quickly and you will waste your money. Get a nice snapshot and send that out. When you start booking lots of jobs, then make that investment.

Have FUN & BREAK A LEG!

No agent yet? Get jobs on your own: mail directly to Casting Directors and Producers/Production Companies using the mailing labels at Commercialkids.com
You will be surprised at how few people think of this.
